Forging New Connections: Kernohan Engineering Hosts the First Moananui Partner Forum
Partner Forum

Kernohan Engineering embarked on a mission when they decided to host the inaugural Moananui Partner Forum. The goal was clear: to build trust and deepen understanding among cluster partners, fostering an environment where each organisation could recognise and harness the unique strengths within the group. By opening their doors and sharing their expertise, Kernohan aimed to spark a new era of collaboration across the blue economy.

For Kernohan, being part of the Moananui cluster isn’t just about joining forces with like-minded organisations; it’s about actively engaging to create a network grounded in trust, respect, and mutual growth. True collaboration begins with understanding—understanding each partner’s strengths, capabilities, and the potential that arises from working together. Hosting the forum was Kernohan’s first step in this journey, a chance to showcase their work and inspire others to share their own.

A Platform for Learning and Connection

Setting the tone for the forum, Kernohan Engineering invited Dr. Sobhan Akhavan, an aquaculture tutor from the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT), as a guest speaker. Recognising that workforce development is vital for industry growth, Kernohan emphasised the importance of educational partnerships. Dr. Akhavan highlighted NMIT’s aquaculture program, focusing on the value of internships and hands-on experience, and explored how cluster partners could offer these critical opportunities.

In addition to the speaker, Kernohan opened their workshop, demonstrating a commitment to transparency and collaboration. This move was more than symbolic; it was a concrete step toward building trust and finding ways to complement, rather than compete with, other partners.

The impact of the forum was immediate and significant. Partners left with a clearer understanding of Kernohan’s engineering capabilities, leading to several key collaborations. Notably, Kernohan partnered with the Cawthron Institute on projects such as "Citizens of the Sea" and "Ocean Intelligence."

Cultivating a Collaborative Ecosystem

The trust and understanding built during the forum quickly translated into tangible outcomes. Partners began reaching out directly to Kernohan with proposals for new projects. These opportunities not only fostered business growth for Kernohan but also allowed them to enhance their capabilities, driving long-term success.

“Our reason for joining Moananui is to deliver on our mission to ‘solve problems that matter.’ We see Moananui and the growth of the blue economy as essential to supporting our region’s development while keeping sustainability at the forefront,” said Paul Miller, CEO of Kernohan Engineering.

Ultimately, the forum laid a solid foundation for a thriving collaborative ecosystem within Moananui. It demonstrated that by coming together, partners can achieve more than they ever could alone - fostering a spirit of shared purpose and mutual success that propels the blue economy forward.
